Kiwi Apteryx Birds

The kiwi is a national icon of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Apteryx is the scientific name for the kiwi, the floor-dwelling, mostly nocturnal flightless native bird of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Almost everything about the kiwi is unique. Over millions of years, kiwi adapted to live in an environment unlike anywhere else on Earth, as it evolved free from the threats of predatory mammals – a biological oddity.

The plight of the kiwi

Kiwi are an endangered species – at very real risk of disappearing from the wild within a few centuries.

The kiwi is one of New Zealand's many flightless birds. They didn't need to fly because there weren't any land mammal predators before man arrived to New Zealand 1000 years ago.

Because kiwi do not fly, their feathers have evolved into a unique texture to suit a ground-based lifestyle.

The kiwi has an extremely unusual beak. Not only does it provide a keen sense of smell, it also has sensory pits at the tip which allow the kiwi to sense movement underground.

The kiwi’s egg is one of the largest in proportion to body size (up to 20% of the female’s weight) of any species of bird in the world. Usually one egg is laid per season.

There are five known species of kiwi, with a number of subspecies. They stand between 25cm (9.8 inch) and 45cm (18cm in) tall.

The kiwi's mostly nocturnal habits may be a result of habitat intrusion by predators, including humans. In areas of New Zealand where introduced predators have been removed, such as sanctuaries, kiwi are often seen in daylight
